Dog Training Methods Uncovered

Over the years there have been numerous training techniques that have been used on dogs.
Some of the methods are touted as the new best thing but usually they are just a rehash or new take on an existing technique.

There are basically six types of training all others being just different take on these methods.

Dog whispering.

This is probably the most recent form of training and relies on understanding the body language and behaviour of the dog.
Dog whispering will let you ‘talk’ to your dog in a way that he will under stand. This type of training is based on positive association and can help you really understand you dog’s problems.

Reward Training

This is the most popular types of dog training used at present and works through rewarding you dog with tasty treats whenever he does something he is supposed to. It is usually coupled with lots of praise and fuss. Your dog associates this ‘reward’ with the behaviour he was carrying out at the time and because a dog thrives on praise and fuss from his owner he will associate something he should do with something good thus encouraging him to continue to do it.

Choke or Check Collar Training.

This method can be very effective especially suited to more dominant dogs as well as large strong dog breeds.
No matter what type of dog you are training please remember that the idea of the choke chain is not to inflict pain, only being used to get your dogs attention.
The check collar is placed over your dog’s head and a lead attached. When you pull on the leash you cause the check chain to tighten around your dogs neck so that he feels a sharp pull. This is used to correct your dog’s behaviour. If he does not pull or misbehave he will not be ‘checked’.
The check collar should only be used for training purposes and you should be very familiar with how a choke collar works before attempting to use it.

Clicker Training

This type of training is a conditional training method that works through association. The clicker is a small plastic box with a clicking metal strip inside it .It is usually used with a treat of some kind.
You give your dog a treat to reward him at the same time as you use the clicker when your dog is doing something correctly. Your dog will initially react to the treat but by association will come to relate to the click. When he hears the click after certain actions he will know he has done something good.

Electric Collar Training

With this method of training you are able to administer a small electric shock to your dog. The shock is administered when your dog needs to be corrected. He will thus lean by the shock not to repeat that action. It can be done instantly and can be a useful tool in training a large aggressive dog that is difficult to control.

Ultrasonic Whistle training

A dogs sense of hearing is much more acute than our own. He can hear frequencies that are totally inaudible to our ears. This has given rise to the ultrasonic whistle.
The sound is not designed to harm a dog but simply to get his attention for training purposes. It is a useful tool for getting his attention from a distance.

There are pros and cons to all these methods and the ones that to choose will be the ones that you feel most comfortable with and the ones that your dog is most responsive to.
One thing all dog owners have to understand is that training does not happen instantly, and you must exercise patience and understanding at all times.

If your dog cannot stay in control before you put the leash on him, then how do you expect him to stay calm during the walk? If you want your dog to be calm and walk with you on his leash then you must have him be calm before the leash even goes on.

Most dogs will give you a reaction when the leash is pulled out let alone before it is even hooked to their collar. This is when your job as the owner is to take control and let your pup know he must relax, and stay calm before the leash training starts. Make your dog sit and stay while you hook on the leash. If he or she does not stay still and look as if they are calm, then you must delay the walk until he or she is acting in accordance with your commands. If you give in and let your canine walk while he is out of control then he will learn it is OK to run wild around the neighborhood. Always stay in control during your dog training techniques.

While doing your dog leash training it is a good idea to have a walk warm up before you go anywhere. Almost all dogs will learn quickly that unless they sit and stay when the leash is being attached, they will not get to go outside. The main idea behind walking your four-legged friend is getting them to walk beside you throughout your entire walk.

If your dog is still pulling the leash after it is attached just stay calm and stand still until he or she relaxes
and sits beside you. The most importance lesson you can take from this article is understanding that unless
your dog is standing beside you, you are not going anywhere. Let them bounce around on the leash all they want, you will not take one step until he or she is in a calm state of mind.

MY DOG IS NOT OUT OF CONTROL SHE IS JUST VERY PROTECTIVE OF HER MOMMA(AKA ME) i will train her to be better. its not my fault she is this way she was like this before i got her and ive been trying to train her but so far its not working…so people if you have rude comments DONT POST THEM!
heres some more on her. she doesnt get fed at certain times. she has a dish where she can always go and get the food and water. plus when we did put her in her crate she would be so anxious to get out that we would make her sit and calm down before she could get out. and then she would run around the places were we eat to see if we dropped food. (knowing my 6 yr old sister my dog{ty} would probly find some food. and she has to wear a harness when being walked because of her breed collars are not used because it will choke her. she means the world me, and i just want to be able to take her to places. so people can see how cute she is in her clothes. (yes she has a wardrobe of clothes XD)
PS. SHE IS DEAF IN ONE EAR I BELIVE. THAT IS WHAT MY CUZIN(the one who gave her to me) TOLD ME. SO THAT MY BE ONE REASON SHE DOESNT LISTEN. AND SHE HAS CADARACTS OR SOMETHING AND CANT REALLY SEE.

In the United Kingdom.

The dog is 18months old, female, a thoroughbred German Shepherd.

Her first owner got rid, because the child in the family was teasing the dog, which after a while turned on him.They decided they had to give the dog to a child-free family, or destroy it.

He has no time for the dog now, and doesn’t want her to be destroyed, or given to another home who may not be able to keep her.

Can he apply for the police to use the dog for training?
If so, how can he do this?

My dog is about 10 weeks old. She knows what ‘come’ means, she almost always listens. But sometimes, when she would rather keep ‘exploring’ something else, she flat out ignores me. What should i do when that happens? Go after her? Pick her up? i don’t want to screw up the training…
Also, she has a tendency to bark at me to demand attention, but at night i can’t ignore her because my parents make a fuss if she keeps barking. What can i do to keep her quiet but not teach her that she gets what she wants by barking?
